AWARD OF CONTRACT AND COMMENCEMENT OF CONSTRUCTION
The City of Unley is committed to making King William Road Adelaide’s most loved main street by transforming it into an exciting and vibrant precinct during the day and at night. We are excited to announce that Council has engaged BMD Constructions Pty Ltd (BMD) to deliver the King William Road Upgrade.
BMD is an award-winning national specialist civil construction company with a significant local workforce based in their Adelaide office located in the City of Unley. The BMD Adelaide Team has delivered a portfolio of community projects including the Henley Square and current Gawler Place redevelopments.
Local products and suppliers will be used in the King William Road Upgrade including the supply of pavers and street furniture for the streetscape.
Commencement and Staging of Construction
The King William Road Upgrade will commence in mid-May 2019 with completion scheduled by the end of February 2020. Works will temporarily stop in early December 2019 to allow for Christmas activities and trading and then recommence in early January 2020.
The upgrade will be undertaken in 4 stages:
· Stage 1 - Park Street and Mitchell Street intersection (starting June 2019)
· Stage 2 - Western kerbline works (starting June 2019)
· Stage 3 – Central pavement replacement works (starting July 2019)
· Stage 4 – Footpaths and paving up to the shopfronts. Landscaping and urban realm features will also be installed during this period (starting August 2019)
An information sheet with construction timelines for each stage and location of works is currently being prepared and will be published on the project website as soon as possible and will also be on display at the upcoming Community Information Sessions which are being planned.
King William Road ‘Open for Business’
Council and BMD will undertake extensive liaison prior to and during all phases of the work in arriving at the best work methods and times that will balance the needs of our different stakeholders. King William Road will continue to operate as a main street precinct and remain open for business during construction. A commitment has been made that pedestrian access to the street and businesses will be maintained at all times.
Council will be working closely with businesses and the King William Road Traders Association to provide ongoing support and information throughout the project.
Hours of work will vary during the project, with a combination of day and night activities required to complete the works in the shortest time possible, while balancing the needs of different stakeholders, including traders and residents. Details regarding how the works will be undertaken will be provided in advance of each stage.
BMD and their Community Engagement Team will be working closely with traders and residents to understand individual requirements during construction, including access, opening hours, deliveries and general day to day movements. One-on-one consultation will be undertaken with directly affected business proprietors and residents over the coming weeks to discuss the works in detail and how these will be undertaken to minimise disruption as much as possible. Advance notice will be provided ahead of works in each stage to those affected.
A dedicated project phone contact number and email will be established by BMD for all construction related enquiries. These contact details will be available on the project website in the near future.
