Trader update: 8 November 2019

Dear KWR Trader,

The King William Road transformation is on schedule and delivering on the community's vision to create a more beautiful, active and accessible destination, that appeals day and night to shoppers, traders, residents and visitors alike.

The new streetscape provides a flexible environment that can adapt into the future, with on-street parking, more opportunities for outdoor dining and places for the community to come together. The upgrade also includes new smart technology including multipoles with LED lighting, smart parking sensors, screens and more.

Over the last week you would have seen the new artist impression appear throughout the street. In the coming week, these will be supported with further displays about different elements of the transformation including information on on-street parking.

What has been happening & what will be happening

Paving

Paving is continuing in the footpaths and flexible spaces and is expected to be substantially completed in the coming week with driveways to be completed by the middle of November.

Trees and Planting

The new trees have been planted delivering on the vision to introduce more greening to King William Road and provide a cooler environment for people to enjoy. The trees are all mature to provide instant impact and are supported by irrigation systems. Over the next few weeks, further landscaping and understory planting will commence.

Lighting and Smart Infrastructure

The new multipoles and lights have been installed. The new multipoles are integrated light poles with power and data capabilities. New LED lights are more pedestrian focused and economical, with automated fault reporting as well as the ability to be dimmed and managed through time controls.

The new lights will be commissioned the week commencing 11 November 2019 allowing the old lights to be decommissioned and removed the following week.

Bollards

Bollard sleeves are now in place. The bollards will be installed towards the end of November. The installation of the required energy absorbing bollards is underway and will continue in the coming weeks.

Ignite Unley Cinema - Friday 13 December

To celebrate the festive season and encourage the community to visit King William Road, the City of Unley are activating Opey Avenue with an Ignite Unley Outdoor Cinema on Friday 13 December (the day that most schools break up for 2019).

This free community event encourages visitors of all ages, starting at 5pm with pre-movie entertainment and the movie, Christmas classic 'Home Alone', starting at dusk.

To make the most of the event, here are a few ideas to consider:

  • Encourage patrons to come early and have dinner before the film

  • Stay open a little later and entice visitors to stop and shop

  • Encourage people to stay for a post-movie drink or dessert.

Get involved:

If you would like to have a take away option promoted at the event on our ‘Movie Menu’ please contact Beth at Keito Events (via email beth.rackham@keito.com.au) so that she can include you in this initiative.
